Choices with context
See why current learning matters across several possible futures.
WMBACC / BREADTH WITH CURRENCY
WMBacc connects subject choices, occupational gateways and applied learning with clearer possibilities for further education, training, apprenticeships, higher education and employment.
A REGIONAL FRAMEWORK
The WMBacc is a collaborative regional initiative connecting learning, skills, employers and future opportunities. Its value lies in making academic, technical and vocational possibilities more visible while keeping learners’ options open.
See why current learning matters across several possible futures.
Explore broad occupational families without premature narrowing.
Employer encounters, applied activity and purposeful challenge.
Qualifications, apprenticeships, training, HE and employment.
WMBACC / myFUTURE
The gateways help learners connect subjects, qualifications and experiences with possible futures. They are lenses for exploration—not six mutually exclusive tracks and never an irreversible decision about a young person’s future.
Engineering, design, production, materials, making and advanced manufacturing.
Construction, infrastructure, sustainability, retrofit and related occupations.
Technology, data, enterprise, finance and professional opportunities.
Creative industries, arts, design, performance, heritage and cultural activity.
Health, care, wellbeing, sport and service to communities.
Education, teaching, childcare, early years and lifelong learning.
Across every gateway: logistics, transport and supply chains make regional life and employment possible. Digital capability, sustainability and communication also travel across the framework rather than belonging to only one gateway.
FROM GATEWAY TO PURPOSEFUL LEARNING
The gateways become educationally powerful when they connect with secure knowledge, structured challenges, excellent teaching, authentic experience and evidence that can be trusted.
Clear question, knowledge map, milestones, partner role, inclusion plan and assessable outcomes.
Instruction, diagnosis, feedback and professional judgement protect learning quality.
Claims are tied to evidence, criteria, provenance, feedback and moderation.
SKILLS ENGLAND / A PROPOSED ALIGNMENT
The WMBacc gateways make career families visible. A shared capability language can help learners show how they think, work and contribute across those families. The demonstrator should align this language with Skills England as national frameworks develop.
Careful distinction: these are proposed working connections for the North Staffordshire demonstrator, not official Skills England competency levels, gateway definitions or endorsements.
ONE ENTITLEMENT / MANY ROUTES
Purposeful Learning and My Space sit across the regional system. The route changes; the promise does not.
| Route | Purposeful Learning adds | My Space connects |
|---|---|---|
| GCSE & A level | Application, enrichment, local contribution and wider context | Subject progress, challenge evidence, experiences and horizons |
| WMBacc | Gateway exploration, applied learning, employer experience and purposeful challenge | Subjects, interests, experiences, evidence and progression choices |
| T level / future V level / vocational | Wider capability and interdisciplinary challenge | Technical study, placements, occupational evidence and choices |
| Apprenticeship & employment | Reflection, wider learning and transferable capability | Workplace learning, qualifications, feedback and advancement |
| Degree & research | Civic, interdisciplinary and enterprise experience | Study, research, professional evidence and networks |
| Return to learning | A purposeful re-entry shaped around prior experience | Existing strengths, support, new evidence and achievable next steps |
FROM REGIONAL FRAMEWORK TO DEMONSTRABLE IMPACT
WMBacc has an identifiable regional purpose and established gateway resources. The next question is how consistently those opportunities strengthen learning, equity and progression—and what evidence would demonstrate that contribution.
Learner experience, institutional participation, employer capacity, access and current evidence.
Gateways, curriculum, local challenges, My Space, provider routes and careers guidance.
Selected cohorts, trained staff, partner activity, robust safeguards and clear success measures.
Impact upon learning, participation, equity, progression, recognition and value.
Important: WMBacc should be described accurately as an emerging regional initiative. The wider North Staffordshire proposition must not imply accreditation, qualification status or proven impact before those claims are independently established.
BEYOND THE BACCALAUREATE / INDEPENDENT REVIEW
The comparative review does not ask which Baccalaureate should prevail. It asks how education can provide coherent, demanding and inclusive learning that connects knowledge, capabilities, recognised achievement and successful progression.
Baccalaureates include qualifications, programmes, accountability measures and regional frameworks. They must be judged against their actual purpose.
Secure disciplinary knowledge and meaningful application are complementary—not competing philosophies.
Experience and portfolios gain currency through valid standards, reliable assessment and confidence from receiving institutions.
Partnership activity matters when it improves learning, access, quality, equity and progression.
Institutional success does not automatically create a coherent journey for the learner from 14 to 25.
Ambition, participation and endorsement cannot substitute for evidence of what works, for whom and under what conditions.
THE INVITATION
WMBacc, Purposeful Learning and My Space can become complementary parts of a stronger regional ecosystem—if learners, educators, providers, employers and public partners shape it together.
